Disney Princess is a media franchise owned by The Walt Disney Company, originally created by Disney

Consumer Products chairman Andy Mooney in the late 1990s and officially launched in 2000. The original eight princesses consisted of Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Mulan. The franchise spotlights a line-up of fictional female heroines who have appeared in Disney animated feature films. The franchise currently includes twelve female protagonists from twelve different Walt Disney Animation Studios films and one Pixar film, each of whom is either royal by birth, royal by marriage, or considered a "princess" due to her significant portrayal of heroism.

Most recently, the line-up has expanded to include Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Anna, Elsa and Moana after the successes of their respective films. Anastasia, Gamora and Shuri are expected to join the line-up.

The Disney Princesses are featured in a wide variety of merchandise, appearing in anything from various sing-a-long movies, dolls and other toys to bed linens, clothing and toiletries (such as hairbrushes and toothpaste). The Princesses are also prominently featured at the Disney theme parks.Since 2013, with the exception of those created after the Disney Renaissance, the Princesses have been showcased in their enhanced and modified/redesigned outfits (excluding Ariel and Mulan), instead of the actual garments that they wear in their respective movies.

Requirements to be a "Disney Princess"

Each Official Disney Princess must meet the following requirements: A) has a primary role in a Disney/Pixar animated feature film, B) is human or mostly human-like (e.g. Ariel), and C) does not appear primarily in a sequel or commercial failure. The actual title of Princess (or equivalent) is not necessary, but certainly helps.

Facts pertaining to the original fairy tales upon which the films are based are irrelevant to the versions appearing in the franchise.

The Princesses themselves, despite appearing in separate films, have distinct similarities. Most Princesses have the common ability to communicate with animals (even if the animals do not actually talk back). They are also known for their inner and outer beauty, as well as having beautiful singing voices (the exception to this is Merida, who only sings a song with her mother when she is little). Each Princess (excluding Merida, Elsa and Moana) also has a romance that is resolved by the end of the film; the male counterparts are known as Disney Princes.  The Princesses can also be grouped depending on what era their films debuted. The "original" three (Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora), are quiet, classy, graceful and romantic daydreamers; they play more of a "damsel in distress" role and suffer from the actions caused by others. They hold an inner strength through compassion, love, kindness and (particularly with Snow White) a strong sense of resilience.  During the Disney Renaissance Era, which started with The Little Mermaid in 1989 and ended in 2000, the heroines in Disney feature films became more active than reactive and included Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas and Mulan. These women were strong-willed, adventurous, feisty, cunning and determined. They were less interested in finding love and more interested in finding adventure and freedom. The Renaissance Princesses also existed in worlds that were more self-aware of the changing roles of women. For example, in The Little Mermaid, the villainess Ursula assures Ariel that she won't need her voice on land as men prefer silent women; Belle, from Beauty and the Beast, is told by Gaston that "it's not right for a woman to read." And Mulan, who joins an army under the guise of a man, must listen to her peers extol masculine traits, while describing an ideal wife who is pretty, obedient and a good cook. The latest Princesses were created within the past decade and are more modern. Tiana from The Princess and the Frog is a young woman who doesn't rely on magic and knows that it takes hard work to reach one's goals; Rapunzel from Tangled, however, is more idealistic and isn't afraid to go after what she wants.

Why Some Disney Females are not a "Disney Princess"

Some female protagonists, even those that hold the "princess" title, may not be included in the official line-up for the following reasons: they are not marketable, their film did poorly at the box office (e.g. Kida from Atlantis: The Lost Empire), they are too young (e.g. Sofia from Sofia the First.), or she is not human (e.g. Nala from The Lion King).

None of the female protagonists from a Disney television series (e.g. Kim Possible, Star Butterfly from Star vs. the Forces of Evil) are considered Disney Princesses.

Official Princesses

Each of the following 14 women has been certified as an "Official Disney Princess." Some were born into the title (e.g. DisneyPrincessesWithAnnaElsaCloser Aurora, Merida), some married the son of a king (e.g. Cinderella), some married a Reigning Prince (e.g. Belle), and some correspond to an equivalent title (e.g. Chieftain's Daughter and Sultan's Daughter). So far,

the one exception to these rules is Mulan; she is currently the only Official Disney Princess who neither comes from a royal bloodline nor marries into royalty.

Born into Royalty: Snow White, Aurora, Ariel, Jasmine (as a Sultan's daughter), Rapunzel, Merida, Anna and Elsa. Pocahontas is considered to be of royal heritage, as she is the daughter of a chief and therefore considered Native American royalty by the English. Elena is also of royal lineage, though she has yet to be officially inducted as a Disney Princess.

Royal by Marriage: Cinderella, Belle, and Tiana become royalty by marriage.

Not Royal: Mulan and Gamora are royal by neither birth nor marriage. However, Mulan is still included in the line-up as she meets other requirements and received grace from the Emperor after saving China. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gamora, who does meet other requirements that are needed for her to join the line-up in the near future, has received grace from the Nova Corps after saving Xandar from Ronan the Accuser.

Regardless of any actual title(s) possessed, each Official Disney Princess is properly addressed (within the franchise) as "Princess ________".

Princess Snow White

01 Snow White

Snow White, titular character of the 1937 Disney movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, is a character based on the German fairy tale "Schneewittchen." Snow White has the honor of being the first Princess in the first Disney animated feature, paving the way for all subsequent princesses. Adriana Caselotti provides the voice/singing voice for Snow White. Her true love is the Prince, who is able to wake her from her eternal sleep with true love's kiss. At 14, she is the youngest of theofficial Disney Princesses.

Princess Cinderella

02 Cinderella

Cinderella is the main protagonist of her eponymous film and two sequels and is the second Disney Princess. She is based on the European fairy tale of the same name, of which several variations exist. Ilene Woods provides the voice/singing voice for Cinderella (Original Disney version), Jennifer Hale provides the voice of Cinderella in the sequels, Tami Tappan provides Cinderella's singing voice in Cinderella III. Cinderella is the first Disney Princess to have siblings (albeit step-siblings) and is 19 years old. Cinderella is the first Disney Princess who is married into royalty (she marries Prince Charming).

Princess Aurora

03 Aurora

Aurora is the titular protagonist of the film Sleeping Beauty, based on the classic fairy tale involving a beautiful princess, a sleeping enchantment, and a handsome prince. Aurora is sixteen years old. Mary Costa provides the voice/singing voice for Aurora. The original story is much darker than the Disney version. Aurora has the distinction of being both the Princess with the least amount of screen time and singing more of her lines than speaking them. Aurora has the purest pedigree of any Disney Princess, being the first and only child of a king (King Stefan) who also presumably marries Prince Phillip, the firstborn son and heir of a king (King Hubert).

Princess Ariel

04 Ariel

Ariel is the female protagonist of the films The Little Mermaid, The Little Mermaid II (although the title of main female protagonist is shared with Melody) and The Little Mermaid III, as well as The Little Mermaid Television Series. Jodi Benson provides the voice/singing voice of Ariel in all Disney animated appearances. Ariel is the first Disney Princess to have not been born human and is also the first Disney Princess confirmed to have children as she and Eric have a daughter, Melody, in the sequel. She is sixteen years old in the first film and is presumably in her late twenties in the sequel. Ariel's title of Princess comes from her father, King Triton, a title she shares with her six older sisters. She acquires the title of Princess Consort through her marriage to Prince Eric, though it is unclear whether he is a Prince Regnant (most likely), the son of a King, or both.

Princess Belle

05 Belle

Belle is the fifth Disney princess and the main female protagonist of the film Beauty and the Beast and its two sequels. Paige O'Hara provides the voice/singing voice of Belle in all three films. Belle is the first Disney Princess to have an antagonist become her love interest. She is also the first person to have a confirmed country in the movie (France). Belle is seventeen years old and the second Disney Princess to be of common birth. When she marries Prince Adam (a Prince Regnant of his principality), she becomes a Princess Consort.

Princess Jasmine

06 Jasmine

Jasmine is the main female protagonist of Aladdin, its two sequels, and the television series. Linda Larkin provides Jasmine's voice in all animated iterations of Aladdin, Lea Solanga provides the singing voice for Jasmine in the original Aladdin, Liz Callaway provides the singing voice for Jasmine in the sequels. Jasmine is the daughter (and only child) of the Sultan of Agrabah, the traditional title styled "Shahzadi Sultana" (Princess). When she marries Aladdin, a commoner (the son of the self-styled "King of Thieves" notwithstanding), he gains the title Prince Consort. Upon the death or abdication of her father in favor of Aladdin (as was stated to be the Sultan's wish), Aladdin would become the Sultan of Agrabah and Jasmine would acquire the title of Sultana. She is the first princess to not be the titular character in her film and is the first non-white and the first Middle Eastern/southwest Asian princess.

Princess Pocahontas

07 Pocahontas

Pocahontas is the main protagonist of the film Pocahontas and its sequel, Pocahontas II, and is the first Disney Princess to have been based (loosely) on a real person, instead of a fairy tale. She is a Powhatan Native American, and she is the first Disney Princess to have two "princes" (John Smith and John Rolfe, though only the former is an official Disney Prince). Pocahontas is the second Princess (after Jasmine) to have her singing voice and speaking voice provided by two different voice actresses. Irene Bedard and Judy Kuhn provide the voice and singing voice of Pocahontas in both movies, respectively. Pocahontas was born as the only child of Chief Powhatan, thus giving her the title of Chieftain's Daughter. Though not royalty, she is accorded the respect of one (i.e. a princess) in the sequel and is officially regarded as a Disney Princess. Her eventual marriage to John Rolfe (a commoner) does not change her status or his.

Princess Mulan

08 Mulan

Fa Mulan is the main protagonist in the Disney film Mulan and its sequel Mulan II. She is the first Disney Princess to be based on a legend and the second not to be based on a fairy tale (Pocahontas). Ming-Na Wen and Lea Salonga provide the voice and singing voice of Mulan in both films, respectively. Mulan is (to date) the only Disney Princess who does not hold the title of Princess in one form or another. However, she does earn the non-noble title of Imperial Consul. Her eventual marriage to General Li Shang (also non-noble) does not grant her any titles either. Mulan and Shang are the only non-royal Disney couple in the Disney Princess franchise.

Princess Tiana

09 Tiana

Tiana is the main female protagonist in the film The Princess and the Frog. Tiana made history as the first African-American Disney Princess. Anika Noni Rose provides the voice/singing for Tiana. She is the third to be married into her title. Commoner-born, Tiana becomes Princess Consort upon her marriage to Prince Naveen, the eldest son and Heir Apparent of the King of Maldonia. She is the most modern of all princesses due to living in 1920s New Orleans and is the first American and first black princess.

Princess Rapunzel

10 Rapunzel

Rapunzel is the main female protagonist in the film Tangled and the short film Tangled Ever After. Like Aurora, she has golden hair, was born into her title, and was removed from her parent's custody as a baby, only to be reunited in her teens. Mandy Moore provides the voice/singing voice for Rapunzel. She is strong-willed and her preferred weapon is a frying pan. As the only child of the King and Queen of Corona, she eventually marries Eugene "Flynn Rider" Fitzherbert, giving him the title of Prince Consort. Upon the death or abdication of her father, Rapunzel will become Queen Regnant of Corona, while her husband will remain Prince Consort.

Princess Merida

11 Merida

Merida is the main protagonist of the Disney/Pixar film Brave, making her the first Pixar Princess. She is the first princess since Ariel to have red hair: she has long, curly, red hair and blue eyes. Kelly MacDonald and Julie Fowlis provide the voice and singing voice for Merida. Merida is a Princess by blood; firstborn of King Fergus of DunBroch. Her lack of a romantic interest (and lack of any sequels) makes it unlikely that she will rise to rule the kingdom as a Regnant Queen, considering the views of gender equality in the era.

Princess Anna

12 AnnaAnna is the main protagonist of the Disney film Frozen and is the younger daughter of the King and Queen of Arendelle (a Norwegian kingdom). Kristen Bell provides the voice/singing voice for Anna. She has long, ginger hair with a white highlight (where Queen Elsa shot her with ice in the head) and blue eyes, and is a free-spirited, fearless, happy-go-lucky, reckless ball of energy who lives by trusting her own feelings. Presumably, she will eventually marry Kristoff and, as a result, grant him the title of Prince Consort. As the next-in-line for the Arendelle throne, she stands to eventually become Queen Regant in her own right after the death or abdication of her sister Queen Elsa. Queen Elsa

Queen Elsa

Elsa the Snow Queen is the deuteragonist of the 2013 animated feature Frozen and Anna's older sister. She is loosely based on Kai and The Snow Queen from the fairy tale "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen. She is the first Disney Princess to be considered an anti-heroine. She was the crown princess of Arendelle and was crowned Queen until her powers over ice were exposed, causing her to flee and become the feared Snow Queen. However, the bond between her and her sister warms her frozen heart, allowing her to use her magic for the greater good. Elsa is the oldest of the Disney Princesses, as she is 21 years of age during the film. Elsa will be the first official Disney Princess to have become a queen in her feature film. She is also the second princess without a love interest, after Merida.

12 Moana

Chief Moana

Moana Wailiki is the protagonist of Disney's 2016 animated feature film of the same name. Born on the island village of Motunui, Moana is the daughter of Chief Tui and Sina, with an inherited love for the seas and voyaging. When her island becomes endangered, Moana is chosen by the ocean to journey across the sea to save both her people and the world. She is Disney's first Polynesian Princess and also the third Disney Princess after Merida and Elsa to not have a love interest.

Elena of Avalor

Princess Elena 3 Elena is a sixteen year old Latin American princess. She is not an official Disney Princess because she came from a television series.

Sofia is the main protagonist of the movie Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess and the Disney 21 Sofia Junior television series Sofia the First. Sofia is a little girl who came into royalty when her mother marries the King of Enchancia. She is voiced by Ariel Winter. Though she is affiliated with Disney Princess franchise in her own show, she is in no way planned to be in the official line-up. This is due to her being from a television show and for the fact that she is too young.

Queen Kida

Kida-0 Kidagakash "Kida" Nedakh is the deuteragonist of Atlantis: The Lost Empire and it's direct-to-video sequel, Milo's Return, is a princess and later a queen of Atlantis. Because of her film's box office failure, she hasn't been inducted into the official lineup. She would have been the eldest princess due to her age being 28 in human years and would have also been the first one to become a queen on-screen. She is also considered to be a "forgotten" character by the programmers of Epic Mickey, making a cameo appearance with her mask.

Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista, and Andrina

Ariel with her Sisters

Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista, and Andrina are Ariel's older sisters. They are the daughters of King Triton and Queen Athena, which makes them the princesses of Atlantica. Ariel's sisters appear only briefly in The Little Mermaid and its sequel, but they each have a more prominent role in The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning, as well as the TV series spin-off.

EilEilonwy (Eye-lon-wee) was first introduced as the main female protagonist in The Black Cauldron. Based on Eilonwy from the novels "The Book of Three" and "The Black Cauldron" by Lloyd Alexander. The movie was Disney's first PG-rated movie. Despite being a princess in her own movie, she never became a part of the official Disney Princess franchise. The reasoning was due to the fact that the movie rating was PG and mainly due to the film's lack of success and copyright issues. Being twelve years old, she would have been the youngest Disney Princess had she been inducted into the franchise.

GiselleGiselle is the main protagonist of the movie Enchanted and a former princess of the Kingdom, Andalasia. Inspired by Disney's own princess franchise. She is both portrayed and voiced by Amy Adams. Though her film was a success and she was initially intended to join the line-up, plans were dropped quickly when the company had realized that they would have to pay royalties to Amy Adams for using her likeness. Additionally, it is her friend, Nancy, who ends up marrying the Prince. If she were to join, Giselle would have been the first official princess to star in a film that was not part of the Disney animation canon.

Megara transparent

Megara (Meg) also more commonly referred to as Meg, is female tritagonist from Disney's Hercules. She is the love interest of Hercules and is voiced by Susan Egan. She was mainly inspired by the character of Megara from Greek mythology. During D23 Expo 2013, Meg was cited as a Disney Princess and Susan Egan was confirmed to be at the event, which led to rumors that she would be entered into the franchise. Unlike Esmerelda, Jane Porter and Tinker Bell who join the franchise and later removed, there hasn't been any evidence proved that she would join the lineup, she was more like a test princess, like Alice, however Disney didn't think she would fit for the franchise.

Melody is the main female protagonist in The Little Mermaid II. She is the daughter of Ariel and Eric and is the first Princess to have only appeared in a Disney sequel. She is not an official Disney Princess because her film was not theatrically released and also being introduced into a sequel. Return to the Sea Melody and Morgana

Nancy Tremaine

Nancy is a secondary character in the film Enchanted. Although she wasn't announced as a princess, she was the one who ended up

marrying Edward at the end of the film. She is not considered an official Disney Princess because due to being the secondary character in the film.

Ting-Ting, Su and Mei

Ting-Ting, Su and Mei are the daughters of the Emperor in Mulan II. They are not official Princesses because they were introduced into a sequel.

Kiara is the daughter of Simba and Nala and also the main female protagonist in The Lion King II. She is not an official Disney Princess because she is a lion.

Kilala is the main protagonist of the manga series Kilala Princess. Most likely she is not a princess because she is a manga character and has never been in a film.

Kneesaa a Jari Kintaka

Kneesaa is a female Ewok who served as the princess of the Bright Tree Village, a daughter of Chief Chirpa and Ra-Lee, and also a younger sister to Asha. She later became the Chieftainess of the Bright Tree Village and Wicket Wystri Warrick's wife. Being a Star Wars character disqualifies her from the roster.

Leia Organa-Solo

Princess Leia is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe. She is also a main protagonist in the original Star Wars trilogy and her position is less descriptive of her family status and more related to her being a figure of authority within the resistance against the Empire (and later she becomes part of the Republic), which disqualifies her from the roster.

Maid Marian

Maid Marian is the main female protagonist in Robin Hood. She is the niece of King Richard, which means that she comes from a royal bloodline; however, she is not a princess because she is non-human and a fox.

Marianne is the female protagonist of Lucasfilm's Strange Magic. Despite being a princess, she is not a Disney Princess because she is a fairy and because of the negative critical reception and box office faillure of the aforementioned movie.

Nala is the main female protagonist in The Lion King and a secondary female protagonist in The Lion King II and The Lion King 1 1/2. She is Simba's love interest, and if she were a princess, she would have been the second princess to have children. However, she is not an official Disney Princess because she is a lion.

Expected to Join

Venellope von Schweetz|Vanellope von Schweetz Vanellope von Schweetz -4 (no background)

Vanellope von Schweetz is the main female protagonist of Wreck-It-Ralph. She is the missing princess of the game Sugar Rush. It has been confirmed that she reunites with the Disney Princesses which would most likely mean that she could join the lineup. Black Panther - Shuri

Princess Shuri

She is the daughter of King T'Chaka and Queen Ramonda, and the sister of T'Challa. Shuri loves her brother deeply, and she helps him run Wakanda. She has genius-level intellect, being on the same intellectual level as Tony Stark, Hank Pym and Bruce Banner. Her vast scientific knowledge helps not only Wakanda as a whole but also T'Challa in his role as the superhero Black Panther. She also appears as a protagonist in the animated series Marvel's Avengers: Black Panther Quest. She is the first Disney princess to come from an African nation. She is also the second Disney Princess to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as be based off a character from the pages of a Marvel Comic.

Anastasia Romanov

Anastasia is a character that was created by 20th Century Fox. She is likley expected to join the lineup because Disney acquired fox in late 2017. The Disney-Fox merger has not been completed yet, but it'll be finalized by Summer 2019. This is about the legend of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, which claims that she, in fact, escaped the execution of her family. Its basic plot centers around an eighteen-year-old amnesiac orphan named Anya who, in hopes of finding some trace of her family, sides with con men who wish to take advantage of her likeness to the Grand Duchess; thus the film shares its plot with Fox's prior film from 1956, which, in turn, was based on the 1955 play by Marcelle Maurette.

Gamora is a character Disney had created for it's live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe canon. Some fans believe that she might join the line up at some point

after the release of either Avengers 4 or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 despite her film, Guardians of the Galaxy, and it's sequels all being live action. However, she is also, one of the main protagonist of an animated series of the same name on Disney XD. She's loosely based off a character of the same name from Marvel's series of comic books. In Disney canon, Gamora, the reformed assassin step-daughter of the Mad Titian Thanos, began seeking her redemption when she was first hired to steal an orb when she finds herself in the middle of a quest to save Xandar from a sinister Kree Accuser. This eventually lead to her becoming friends with and joining the other members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Whether Gamora should or shouldn't join the line-up has been the subject of debate among fans, due to her films all being live action even though there might be a chance that she may. If included, Gamora would be the first Disney Princess from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as be based off a character from a Marvel Comic. Her film would also be the first Disney Princess film to be originally based off a Marvel comic since Disney is the parent owner of Marvel. She would also be the oldest princess in the franchise for at the start of her first film, Gamora is 24-years-old. In addition, the inclusion of Gamora would make her and Peter Quill the second non-royal Disney couple to be part of the line-up. She is portrayed by Zoe Saldana.

With the exceptions of Snow White, Cinderella, Belle, Pocahontas, and Tiana, all the Disney Princesses had either uncomfortable adolescent conversations or arguments with their parental authority figures which led to turning points in their lives.

  • Triton, whose argument with Ariel and eventual destruction of her collection drove her to Ursula and becoming human.
  • Aurora learning about her princesshood and betrothal led her to falling under Maleficent's spell, which led her to the spinning wheel.
  • Jasmine's conversation with the Sultan about getting married led her to run away.
  • Mulan had an argument with her father causing her to take his place as a soldier.
  • Rapunzel's belittling and orders not to leave the tower by Gothel leading her to leave the tower with Flynn and to her ensuing adventures.
  • Merida and her mother's heated argument resulting in near tragedy.
  • Gamora argued with Thanos over Nebula and the Soul Stone, which eventually, lead to her "death" in Avengers: Infinity War.

  • In the franchise: Cinderella, Aurora, and Belle wear ball gowns. Ariel wears a bouffant gown. Snow White and Merida wear their court dresses. Jasmine wears casual attire. Tiana is shown in her wedding gown. Rapunzel wears her peasant dress. Pocahontas and Mulan are seen in the ethnic clothing of their respective countries. Anna wears both her coronation gown and travel attire.
  • Snow White, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Rapunzel, Anna, Elsa and Merida wear their iconic dresses for a long time in their film.
    • Cinderella wore her light silvery-blue dress only at the ball.
    • Aurora used the pink version of her dress during the dance with Phillip.
    • Ariel wore the pink dress for dinner with Eric (Ariel's new sea green dress was designed for the redesign. She never actually wore the dress in the movie).
    • Belle wore her golden yellow dress twice when she danced with her love interest.
    • Mulan used her two iconic dresses only at the beginning of the movie.
    • Tiana wore her green dress for her first wedding with Naveen.
    • Gamora only wore her first iconic outfit in her first film and in the animated series.
    • Gamora wore her current main outfit in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout, and Avengers: Infinity War.

    • Although every Princess has worn a hair accessory of some kind.
  • Ariel and Jasmine are the only two Princesses to wear midriff-baring outfits (Ariel's case is her seashell bikini top, and Jasmine's case is her iconic cropped off-shoulder top).
  • Nine Princesses wear outfits with their shoulders visible (Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Tiana, Merida, Anna, Elsa, Elena and Moana).
  • Interestingly, the three Disney Princesses that became royalty by marriage (Cinderella, Belle, and Tiana) all wore opera gloves and are the only Princesses to have done so.
  • Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Mulan as Middle Eastern, Native American, and Chinese ethnicities respectively, wear clothing and underpinnings appropriate to their time and place.
  • Cinderella, Ariel, Mulan, and Merida are shown in their undergarments at one point in their films (Cinderella in the 2002 sequel).
  • Gamora is the only princess to wear prison wear in her first film.
  • Gamora only wears a body suit in the TellTale game as a node to her comic book counterpart.
  • In addition, Gamora is the only princess to be depicted carrying a sword on her.
  • Although Mulan is regarded as a "warrior", she is only depicted with a sword in some of her designer doll models.
  • Merida is often depicted carrying her bow and arrow around.
  • Cinderella, Ariel, Jasmine, Mulan, Tiana, and Rapunzel are the only Princesses to be seen wearing a wedding dress in their films.
    • Mulan and Tiana are the only Princesses to not wear the usual white wedding dress (Mulan's is red and Tiana's is green).
    • Cinderella, Jasmine, and Mulan are the only Princesses that are seen wearing wedding dresses in their respective sequels.
    • Tiana is the only Princess to have two wedding dresses.
  • The Princesses' designs have changed over the years. Originally they simply wore their plain outfits, then were redesigned with a new pose, and a tiara. Notably, Aurora, Tiana, and Rapunzel's tiaras remain the same with the addition of more jewels. Later the crowns were modified to match the dresses with capes and jewels added. As time passed the gowns grew gaudier, recolored gold (Ariel was sometimes shown with a gold tail), and drawn with sparkles, metallic finishes, and now with more modernized fashions. During holidays, their dresses change into the holiday's theme.
    • Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, and Jasmine are the only Princesses to be featured in the Golden Disney Princess franchise.
    • All Princesses were featured in the Jeweled Disney Princess franchise, except for Pocahontas, Rapunzel, Anna, Elsa, Gamora, Elena, Moana, and Merida.
  • Jasmine, Mulan, and Tiana are the only Princesses who sleep in two-piece separate pajama tops and pants. All others wear nightgowns to bed.
  • All Princesses wore an accessory or outfit in the color blue or in a shade of bluish color.
  • With the exception of Snow White, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Tiana, Merida, Anna and Gamora, princesses wear an outfit of the color pink.

  • In their redesigns, they're made to look roughly the same age and height.
  • Pocahontas is the only Disney Princess to have no glitter on her redesign since it is replaced by jewels.
    • Due to controversy, Merida's redesign received a second version without sparkles. She is alternately shown in her version with glitter and without.
  • Ariel and Mulan are the only Princesses to have their own dresses in their redesigns. The others wore redesigned versions of the iconic dresses from their respective films.
  • Tiana, Rapunzel, and Merida are the only Princesses with the least redesign updates, having only sparkles on their gowns.
  • In early promotions of the redesigns, Ariel's dress was pink instead of green and Mulan's dress was more reddish with sparkles. Snow White's sleeves were transparent. Cinderella was the only Princess with more than one photo of her in her redesign. Jasmine's top is ripped instead of the redesigned top. Aurora had a long sash on her hips instead of the triangular cutouts. Belle had sleeves that were covering her shoulders instead of revealing them.
  • For the TellTale game, Gamora was given a redesign that was a combination of both her comic book and cinematic counterparts. In this case, her hair was made to be purple with pink highlights along with yellow tattoo-like marking around her eyes and a grey and white body armor as nodes to her comic book counterpart from the Earth-616 narrative.

Disney Princesses in Once Upon a Time

Some of the Disney Princesses have appeared in the ABC series Once Upon a Time, with the series centering on Emma Swan, the daughter of Snow White who has to break a curse. The ABC Studios is owned by Disney, and therefore they have rights to the Princesses. Snow White, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Mulan, Tiana, and Merida have all appeared on the show. The series has also featured two different versions of Cinderella and Rapunzel. Pocahontas, Moana, Elena, Anastasia, Shuri and Gamora are the only Princessces not to be featured in the series.

Six of the Princesses (Snow White, the Enchanted Forest Cinderella, Aurora, Belle, Mulan, and Merida) are all associated with Red Riding Hood in Storybrooke with their Storybrooke counterparts, respectively and ten (Snow White, the Magical Forest Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, the Enchanted Forest Rapunzel, Merida, Jasmine, Tiana, and the Magical Forest Rapunzel) are associated with the Evil Queen in Storybrooke, Hyperion Heights or in the flashbacks.

Some of the Princesses meet each other in Once Upon a Time: Snow White met the Enchanted Forest Cinderella, Aurora, Mulan, Belle, Ariel, the Enchanted Forest Rapunzel, Merida, Jasmine, the Magical Forest Cinderella, and Tiana. The Enchanted Forest Cinderella met Snow White and Aurora. The Magical Forest Cinderella met the Magical Forest Rapunzel, Tiana, and Snow White. Aurora met Mulan, Snow White, Belle, and the Enchanted Forest Cinderella. Ariel met Snow White, Belle, and Jasmine. Belle met Snow White, Mulan, Ariel, Aurora, the Enchanted Forest Rapunzel, Merida, and Jasmine. Jasmine met Snow White, Belle, and Ariel. Mulan met Aurora, Snow White, Belle, and Merida. Tiana met the Magical Forest Cinderella, the Magical Forest Rapunzel, and Snow White. The Enchanted Forest Rapunzel met Snow White and Belle. The Magical Forest Rapunzel met the Magical Forest Cinderella and Tiana. Merida met Snow White, Belle, and Mulan. Snow White, Belle, the Magical Forest Cinderella, the Magical Forest Rapunzel, and Tiana are main characters in at least one season. Aurora, Mulan, Ariel, Merida, and Jasmine are secondary, recurring characters while the Enchanted Forest Cinderella and the Enchanted Forest Rapunzel are small, rather unimportant characters in the series, who have appeared in just a couple of episodes.

Snow White and Belle are the only Princess to appear in all seven seasons. Snow White, the Enchanted Forest Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, and Merida are the only Princesses who appear in Storybrooke. Under the first Curse, the Princesses had different names in Storybrooke. Snow White was called Mary Margaret Blanchard (which remained her name), the Enchanted Forest Cinderella was known as Ashley Boyd and Belle was named Lacey. At her arrival from the Land of Untold Stories, Jasmine went by the name Shirin. Snow White, Aurora, Merida and Tiana are the only Princesses to become queens on the show. Snow White, the Enchanted Forest and Magical Forest Cinderellas, Aurora, Belle, and the Magical Forest Rapunzel are the only Princesses to become mothers on the show.

Merida is the only Princess to have her story in the show taking place after her respective film (Brave). Belle and both the Enchanted Forest Rapunzel and the Magical Forest Rapunzel are the only Princesses whom their Prince is a different character (Rumplestiltskin for Belle, the Enchanted Forest Rapunzel doesn't end up with a prince, but the latter nevertheless was saved from her tower by Prince Charming, the Magical Forest Rapunzel's husband is a peasant man named Marcus Tremaine). The Magical Forest Cinderella, Mulan, Tiana, and both the Enchanted Forest Rapunzel and the Magical Forest Rapunzel are the only Princesses who don't appear in Storybrooke. Mulan, and both the Enchanted Forest Rapunzel and the Magical Forest Rapunzel are also the only Princesses whom their respective Princes (Li Shang and Flynn Ryder) don't appear on the show. Mulan is the only Princess to not have her antagonist, Shan Yu, appear in the series. Both the Enchanted Forest Rapunzel and the Magical Forest Rapunzel are the only Princesses who are not associated with Emma Swan.

Pocahontas is the only Princess who did not appear on the show, nor did she appear in its spin-off. Alice, Wendy Darling, Tinker Bell, Maid Marian, and Megara are the only unofficial Princesses who appear on the show.

Ariel is the only Princess who never met with her villains, despite her villains appearing on the show. However, she knows Ursula by reputation. The Enchanted Forest Cinderella is the only Princess who appeared in the spin-off series, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.

The Magical Forest Cinderella, Tiana, and the Magical Forest Rapunzel are the only Princesses associated with the Hyperion Heights neighborhood. Belle and the Magical Forest Rapunzel are the only Princesses to die (not including the Wish Realm Snow White who was killed by the Evil Queen). Since the Magical Forest Rapunzel is also Lady Tremaine, this makes Rapunzel the only Princess to play an antagonist.

From Princess to Queen

Only some of 11 Princesses will be crowned as Queen in the future, either a Queen Regnant, who is ruling by her own right, or a Queen Consort, who is the wife of a ruling King.

  • Snow White: As the only daughter of the late King, she inherits the throne upon her stepmother's death, becoming Queen Regnant of the Kingdom. Her husband, the Prince, then stays as a prince, until he becomes King of his own land. It is possible that his father is the Sovereign Prince of a Principality (not a King), or that the Prince is not even the firstborn, and might never inherit the throne. If the prince is the heir to the throne and his father dies or abdicates, then Snow White and the prince will become co-rulers.
  • Cinderella will only be Queen Consort following the death or abdication of Prince Charming's father, the King.
  • Aurora: Upon the death of her father, King Stefan, Aurora will become Queen Regnant of her Kingdom and place Phillip as the Prince Consort, a similar position to modern day HRH Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. Upon the death of King Hubert, Prince Phillip will become King of his Kingdom, while Aurora becomes his Queen Consort. When both King Stefan and King Hubert are dead, Aurora will become Co-Queen, and Phillip will become Co-King, jointly ruling the two realms. Their heir will inherit both crowns upon their deaths, creating a personal union. If Phillip dies before Aurora, then Aurora stays Queen Regnant of her own realm, and will also be Queen Dowager (widow of a king). If her heir is not yet of age, a Queen Regent (acting Queen until the heir's age of majority/coronation). If she chooses to abdicate upon her heir's coronation, the heir will become the King/Queen of a personal union and Aurora will then be a Queen Mother (mother to the reigning Monarch). A personal union is a union of two or more realms that shared the same monarch, like modern day Commonwealth.
  • Ariel is the Princess Consort of Eric's Sovereign Principality in her movie's sequel, and since she is seventh in line to the Throne of Atlantica and now lives on land (and will be placed lower in line of succession if her sisters have children of their own), she won't be Queen Regnant of Atlantica.
  • Belle will not be Queen since the Beast is only a Sovereign Prince of his Principality, not of a Kingdom.
  • Jasmine will only be considered as the Sultan's wife as Aladdin will rise to the Sultan's throne due to the Arabic traditions of male leaders.
  • Pocahontas' father, Powhatan, is elected as chief, not crowned through inheritance, and Pocahontas cannot be elected chief due to tribal traditions of male leaders.
  • Mulan will not become queen at all since she has no royal ties.
  • Tiana won't be Queen Consort since Naveen is cut off from the Maldonian line of succession by his parents.
  • Rapunzel will be Queen of Corona when her parents die/abdicate, and Eugene will be her Consort
  • Merida either will be or not be Queen of DunBroch, since she has brothers, in which usually younger brothers surpass their older sisters in line of successions, but it depends on DunBroch's law.
  • Gamora will not become queen due to her love interest, Peter Quill's royal title as "Prince of Spartax" from the comics being disregarded from Disney canon. However, it's also unknown if Gamora was ever a royal before meeting Thanos, but there are fan theories that suggest that her biological father may have been a Nova Prime of her home world. Currently, she is regarded as a "national hero" to both the people of Xandar and the Nova Corps.
  • Since Elena is the current ruler of Avalor, she will become queen sometime after she becomes of age (presumably age 21). However, since she is still a minor, she is regarded as a sovereign princess.
  • With T'Challa dying at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Shuri will be able to become queen of Wakanda since she is her brother's successor considering he had no heirs of his own at the start of Black Panther. Interestingly in the comics, Shuri did succeed her brother as queen and Black Panther.
  • Even if Leia's step-parents survived, Leia will not become queen due to royal titles being subjects of elections held by the senate in the StarWars canon.
  • Anna will not become queen, due to being regarded as a "spear" to the throne.

Disney Infinity

Only eight of the fifteen princesses have appeared as playable characters in the game series. These Princesses are Jasmine, Mulan, Gamora, Rapunzel, Merida, Anna, Elsa and Moana.

  • Vanellope is also a playable character, but she is not viewed as an official member of the Disney Princesses.
