Bhopal: The artistic fingers of Mumtaz Khan, a fashion designer in the city are these days busy designing a unique cotton lehenga with 30 metre flared and 80 braids in Bagh, Dabu and Kalamkari prints for ensuing Garba.
Busy as he is, he shared to the Free Press about the dress elements of the lehenga he is making. “It is purely cotton stuff with 30m flared and 80 braids. And we have used three prints – Bagh, Dabu and Kalamkari which represents three states including MP, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh,” said Khan who recently got appreciation for designing 170 metre skirt which showcased in an event ‘India at 70’, held at Glasgow Scotland UK.
He further said about the reason behind to select cotton stuff for the lehenga, “I want to promote cotton. I can do lot of experiment in the stuff. If we work in the eco-friendly stuff, we can also check global warming. Artisans can also get benefited from it.”
Regarding training, Khan says, “I didn’t take any training and do any course of designing. I have inherited my mother who used to make artefacts like batuaa and other embroidery works like zari zardoji work. I think, practical knowledge is more important than any institutional knowledge. I did course of personality development and grooming from Delhi.”
“I got first chance to design props and costume for a movie ‘In Custody’ of big production for Merchant of Venice. After that I designed a dress for model Shawar Ali and got huge appreciation by fashion lovers from Mumbai. After that I started getting offers for making dress. And from then to now, I have designed various dresses for big celebs like zulfi Syed Anaida Diandra, Hansraj hans , Rahul bhat Natasha Suri, Priyanka Shah Dimple Patel Sangya Lakhanpal, Supriya Aiman and the list is long. I have also designed costume for film ‘Mehram’ for actor Farida Jalal Sushma Seth and Rajit Kapoor. He also got appreciation by designing 1000 and 300 metre flared lenhga in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh foundation day.
